Automatic Movements
A spinning rotor turns the motion of your wrist into power. Here's how self-winding works.
The automatic (self-winding) movement is the manual movement's cleverer sibling and the beating heart of most mechanical watches sold today. The idea, perfected by Rolex's full-rotor “Perpetual” design in 1931: let the wearer's own motion do the winding.
The rotor is a weighted half-disc that always falls toward the ground. Move the watch and the movement rotates around the rotor — that relative motion is geared down to wind the mainspring automatically.
How it works
A weighted half-disc — the rotor — pivots freely at the center of the movement. Because it's heavier on one side, gravity always pulls it toward the ground; every time your wrist moves, the movement effectively rotates around the rotor. That relative spin passes through reduction gears and winds the mainspring. From there, everything works exactly like the manual movement you already know: mainspring → gear train → escapement.
Living with an automatic
- Worn daily, it never stops. A normal day's activity keeps the mainspring comfortably topped up.
- You can't overwind it. A slipping clutch on the mainspring lets excess winding slip safely once full.
- Left in a drawer, it runs down in 40–70 hours. Restart with ~20 crown turns rather than shaking it like a snow globe.
- It's thicker than a manual — the rotor needs headroom — and you can often feel it gently spin on your wrist.
Automatic vs manual, honestly
Convenience vs ritual. An automatic suits a watch you wear most days and want to ignore; a manual suits deliberate, engaged ownership. Neither is “better” — most collectors eventually own both, and both need the same thing after a weekend off the wrist: a wind and an accurate set.
