Quartz — and Telling Them Apart
Battery-powered accuracy, and the field guide to spotting quartz vs mechanical at a glance.
In 1969, Seiko's quartz Astron made the most accurate watch movements in history look quaint overnight — the “quartz crisis” that nearly killed Swiss watchmaking. Today quartz and mechanical coexist happily, and knowing both (and how to tell them apart at a glance) is a foundational enthusiast skill.
How quartz works
A battery sends current through a tiny quartz tuning fork, making it vibrate at exactly 32,768 times per second — quartz is piezoelectric, so it vibrates at an ultra-stable frequency when energized. A chip counts those vibrations, and every 32,768th one, it pulses a stepper motor: tick. One second, on the nose. No winding, near-perfect accuracy, a battery swap every few years.

The field guide: quartz or mechanical?
- Watch the seconds hand. One jump per second = quartz. A smooth glide (really 5–10 micro-steps per second) = mechanical.
- Read the dial. Many quartz watches say “quartz” outright. “Automatic” on the dial means mechanical.
- Feel the weight. Mechanical movements are dense little machines; quartz modules are featherweight.
- Listen. A mechanical watch ticks rapidly and quietly (hold it to your ear); quartz gives one soft tick per second.
So which should you buy?
Both. Quartz is the sane choice: accurate, cheap, zero-maintenance — perfect for a beater or a first watch. Mechanical is the emotional choice: a living machine with centuries of craft behind it that will outlive you if serviced. Most enthusiasts' collections hold both without a hint of contradiction.
